ABOUT DOULA SOPHY

Definition of a doula:

A doula is a non-medical professional companion, who provides emotional & practical support, together with information & signposting.

Background

With a wealth of experience and a heart full of warmth, I proudly wear multiple hats - a birth & postnatal doula, a lactation/breastfeeding supporter, baby carrying consultant and hypnobirthing educator. My journey to becoming a doula began nearly two decades ago when my passion for supporting parents ignited as a breastfeeding support charity volunteer in 2005. From there, I evolved to become a La Leche League leader and founded Southsea Slings, a baby sling library before attending Leila Baker's Side By Side Doula Preparation Course.

I am now recognised by Doula UK, an emblem of my commitment to excellence. I enjoy facilitating clients' hypnobirthing education having trained with The Birth Uprising School, and I embrace the opportunity to share science and human rights-based birth preparation locally in Portsmouth, South East Hampshire, and West Sussex.

My Philosophy

Each step in my own journey, from my initial degrees in anthropology & law, has been driven by my belief in just how amazing & capable people inherently are and the importance of human rights. I want to ensure you can easily step into your own power to make choices that truly resonate with you. Driven by the desire to seek to  provide inclusive and comprehensive support I have also attended workshops like The Queer Birth Club's 'LGBT+ Competency Workshop' and 'Black Breastfeeding Week’, in addition choosing a full-spectrum and inclusive doula preparation course.

We never stop learning, every client teaches me, and I actively seek supervision and engage with formal continuing professional development and learning.   I am enjoying learning from Dr Rachel Reed as a member of her Reclaiming Childbirth Collective.

I believe that the positive power of peer support should never be underestimated.  It is my delight to volunteer for the local support group 'Informed Pregnancy, Birth & Beyond.'  I like to do my best at weaving communities of support, inspiration and encouragement, as my client, whether it's for a baby carrying consultation or birth doula work, I invite you to join a supportive community.

Your doula

As your doula, my goal is to give you the attention and information you need to make your own, unique, informed decisions about your pregnancy, birth and postnatal paths.  Led by your needs and wishes I encourage you to craft your dream birth plan (and Plans B & C) and imagine what your postpartum sanctuary will be.  Embracing your personal choices, I have accompanied clients in Winchester, Portsmouth, Chichester, Fareham, Southampton, Petersfield and many of the lovely places in between.

Antenatal
As you prepare to welcome your little one(s), my antenatal and hypnobirthing services stand ready in person or online. They're not just classes; they are designed to support your confidence and prepare you for the transformative journey ahead. Drawing from my extensive experience, I invite you to use information and explore evidence-based knowledge, helping you make informed choices that resonate with your inner compass.

Birth
As your doula, I am by your side, championing your dreams and holding space for your wishes. I have had the privilege of supporting diverse birthing experiences, from homebirths to VBACs, and from elective caesarean to freebirths. With me, you find an approachable, non-judgmental confidante who embraces all paths and honours your choices.

Postnatal
In the postnatal chapter, I offer a range of essential support - from a listening ear and companionship to practical assistance with infant feeding, baby carrying, and the whirlwind of daily tasks. Together, we navigate this tender period, celebrating small victories and guiding you with warmth and empathy.

I am thrilled to be part of your journey. Let's connect and explore the incredible possibilities that lie ahead. Feel free to reach out, and let's embark on this transformative adventure together. No ones story is the same. Your story is your masterpiece in the making.   Let's explore whether I would be the right doula for you.
